Philanthropist Greg Moyle sees art as connection
Greg Moyle's interests are many and varied: from avid art collector to financial planner and Grey Lynn Farmers Market stallholder.
After recently bequeathing 20 significant works of New Zealand art to Auckland Art Gallery, we met with Greg to learn more about what art means to him and how a legacy is made. Watch the full video to hear more.
‘I’m a collector, passionate about art, and I’ve been very privileged that I’ve been able to, over time, with the help of many people, collect a treasure trove,” Moyle says. ‘The only issue is, I don’t think I can take it all with me…’
Moyle’s promised gift to Auckland Art Gallery includes 20 works from some of New Zealand’s most influential artists such as Rita Angus, Jacqueline Fahey, Ralph Hotere, Raymond McIntyre and more.
Moyle was always interested in New Zealand art. He says, ‘…it was often an opportunity to meet either the artist or the family. Without art, that connection would have never happened.’
Now, after 50 years of collecting, Moyle has been asking himself what’s going to happen to his collection when he’s gone. ‘I didn’t collect it to sell,’ he says. ‘By doing what I’ve done with the Gallery, that collection [of works] is kept together, not only for me and my family, but for the wider community.’
