Luca Giordano was the most important Italian decorative painter of the second half of the 17th century, and was nicknamed Luca fa presto (Luca go fast) because of the speed of his execution. He moved away from the chiaroscuro favoured by Caravaggio and his followers, introducing a new sense of light, glowing colour and dramatic action to his work. St Antony of Padua is one of the modelli for Giordano's frescoes in S. Antonio de los Portugueses o Alemanes in Madrid (between 1698 and 1700) and represents a Miracle of St. Antony of Padua.
