This animated portrait dates from the period that Margaret Butler was a pupil in the studio of Antoine Bourdelle. It gained sufficient recognition to be displayed at the 1927 Salon des Tuileries in Paris where it was sold within three days. The Salon Des Tuileries, an exhibition for painting and sculpture, was first held in 1923 and initiated by Butler’s teacher the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle.

As a portrait of an individual’s appearance it is both moving and filled with life. The work has obviously been based on very close scrutiny of the subject while combined with much empathy for her individuality and character.
