John Fields made his portrait of John Allen, Rangitoto, Auckland in 1974. It results from a fortuitous moment when both men were swimming off Milford Beach at Auckland's North Shore. Fields realised that a mesmerizing combination of a low-slung cumulus cloud, the distant peak of the volcanic Rangitito Island and John Allen's own bobbing head constructed a memorable and surreal image.
