Collections, bequests and donations

Since opening in 1888, the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki collection has grown thanks to generous and forward-thinking donors. Explore the collections, bequests and donations that have shaped our collection.

History of gifts and bequests to the Gallery

Throughout the Gallery's history, our collection has grown due to the generosity of gifts and bequests, the patronage of membership and affiliate groups, and collection partner arrangements. From James Mackelvie and George Grey in the late 19th century to the Chartwell Trust and Julian and Josie Robertson in the present day, their gifts help us bring art to all.

One-third of the Gallery’s holdings are made up of permanent loans including the Mackelvie Trust and Edmiston Trust collections, while long-term loans include the Chartwell Trust and Thanksgiving Foundation. The Gallery maintains long-term responsibility for their care research, publication, display and outward loan as well as playing an active role in their development.
