Lecture 2 – Identifying Lindauer: The authentic and the fake

As Lindauer’s works became more valuable, a number of works with questionable authorship came on the market. Unless a lot is known about the technique of the authentic works, forgeries can be very difficult to categorically identify.  By examining the known and questionable works side-by-side, it has been possible to identify the key techniques that demonstrate Lindauer as creator of these works.

About the artist

Gottfried Lindauer was born in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and professionally trained at the Academy Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1874  he migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand. Lindauer's first portraits of Māori were painted in Nelson though he worked in many parts of New Zealand before establishing a studio in Auckland in the late-1870s. Here he met businessman Henry Partridge (1848–1931), who over the next 30-plus years commissioned portraits of eminent Māori as well as large-scale depictions of Māori life and customs.

About the speaker

Sarah Hillary was the principal conservator at  Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki,  working at the Gallery for 40 years, retiring in 2024. As a painting conservator, she specialised in the work of artists from Aotearoa from the 19th and 20th centuries – the treatment of these works, and the study of their materials and techniques. Most recently, Sarah has been working on an early history of conservation at the Gallery, particularly the work of the conservator Lesley Charles Lloyd, who was a member of staff from 1954 to1971.
