Artwork Information

'This tree is very abundant in the neighbourhood of Cook's Strait. The Natives obtain a very fine oil by pressing the black inner nut of the fruit. A small sample of the oil which was sent to England was highy approved of, and was thought especially fit for application to machinery.'

(Edward Jerningham Wakefield, Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand from 1839 to 1844; with some account of the beginning of British colonization of the islands. Plate XIII, no.1).
