Artwork Information
Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström originally created this cartoon puzzle of the world as a do-it-yourself interactive. The enticing colour and playful format belie a political undertone. The map pieces carry stories of corruption, suffering and oppression in their frames, challenging the viewer to play god of the universe in their rearrangement of the Earth. Fahlström turned to painting after studying art history and archaeology. He started making assemblages as early as 1957, and this multiple reveals his often eclectic interests and ethical position.
