Artwork Information

Miró's work became characterised by space populated by fantastic shapes suggestive of living organisms. In Le Styx he makes reference to the river in the classical Underworld over which the souls of the dead are traditionally ferried by Charon. Both Miró and Léonor Fini drew on images of the primeval swamp rather than a river, which also serves as a metaphor for the subconscious mind, from which uncontrolled and often inexplicable images rise fetidly to the surface of our awareness.
