Artwork Information
Reece King takes a visceral, visual approach to abstraction rather than a considered academic one. Using his own unique visual language, figuration is fragmented, arranged in new and unpredictable ways. His energetic stratification of paint invites a closer look, revealing hidden layers of motifs. In Kimoa Malla, the figuration plays with geometry, suggestive of forms which seem allusive and familiar at the same time. A bright colour palate outlined in bold but smudged black, King’s work suggests optimism and humour, not taking itself too seriously.
Of his work, King says ‘When I look at a bad painting it makes an annoying sound. When I look at a good, finished painting, it sort of hums, it reverberates, it resonates’ – Reece King, 2023.
