Robert Indiana said, ‘I propose to be an American painter, not an internationalist speaking some glib Esperanto.’ Famous for his LOVE images of the 1960s, including paintings, banners and sculptures, Indiana’s works have become icons of that idealistic era. His Pop vocabulary draws from America’s abundant post-World War II supply of new commodities and huge, crisp-edged, bold-coloured signs bearing their messages of seduction and instruction. Indiana’s America is one where everything comes with a brand – even love – but it is also one where dreams are written large.
