Mere Kuru Te Kati

Artwork Information

Mere Kuru Te Kati of Ngāti Tamatera has been written into history as a determined woman but in contemporary terms she would be today described as an environmental activist. Mere was emphatically opposed to gold mining at Ohinemuri in the Thames region. In 1875, the New Zealand Government opened up Ohinemuri for mining and proclaimed the district as a gold-mining region.
