Artwork Information
The Virgin and Child exhibits a similar intimacy in scale to Giorgione's work, and would have been a domestic commission for private devotion. The painting is a type of sacra conversazione, the term given for the depiction of saints alongside the Virgin and Child. St Sebastian was believed to protect against disease, particularly the plague, while the Madonna and Child represent the protection of the Church in all its aspects.
