Of Putiki Wharanui marae, near the mouth of the Wanganui River, Hori Kingi Te Anaua was a leader of the Ngati Ruaka people of Te Ati Haunui a Paparangi and signed the Treaty of Waitangi at Wanganui in 1840. He was baptised at Putiki on Christmas Day 1842 by missionary John Mason and took the name Hori Kingi or George King. Te Anaua is wearing a finely woven kahukiwi or kiwi-cloak, which is considered a highly valued taonga or heirloom.
