Artwork Information

Many artists look for alternative styles and sources for inspiration. In the 1930s, under the direct influence of archaic Greek vase painting that he studied in the Musée du Louvre, Braque abandoned his use of Cubist geometry and pursued a series of line drawings and prints with continuous contours. Commissioned by Ambroise Vollard, the freedom of the lines moving in and out of specific representation made this suite of 16 works very popular.
