Artwork Information

The poem by Hesiod which fascinated Braque dates from the late 8th century BC, at the very beginnings of Greek literature, and is both a cosmogony and a theogony, describing the birth of the universe and the genealogy of the gods. Many of the individuals depicted by Braque were either gods or muses. Just as he was responsible with Picasso for many of the innovations and experiments associated with Cubism, so their style of line drawing demonstrates a similar fluidity.
