Portrait of William Smart

Artwork Information

Portraits by Lindauer are highly prized and valued, particularly as ancestral records. He worked from photographs, which accounts for why some portraits appear non-interactive. Indeed, Lindauer was commisioned to paint William's portrait after he was killed when a jigger was hit by a train while he was working for New Zealand Railways. William Smart was born in Woodville (Papatawa) where Lindauer lived and kept a studio.
