Danseuse mettant son bas [Dancer Putting on Her Stocking]

Artwork Information

This bronze figure of a dancer putting on her stocking belongs to the series of seventy-four figures executed in wax by the artist. Seventy-two of the models were cast posthumously by A A Hébrard, of which this was number 14 in his exhibition in Paris in 1921. The original model was made between 1896 and 1911, and is considered by many to be the finest that Degas created. The figures were sculpted in wax as an aid to his painting after his eyesight started to fail. On the base there is a stamp, 29/H.
