Artwork Information

Working directly from paint tubes, washing, and scraping this large untitled work by Secundino Hernández sits on the border of abstract minimalism and action painting. The physicality of his process-driven approach is evident on the canvas. As one of his ‘wash’ paintings, the work is characterised by its gestural line and strong underlay of colour - produced by scraping through layers of paint, layering and then removing. For Hernández this process isn’t far removed from sculptural carving.

Thin, scrawled black lines appear loosely figurative, rich bursts of colour compete for attention and draw the eye across the length of the pale blue canvas. The resulting image is vivid and exploratory, the energetic movement giving way to a harmonious whole.
