Artwork Information
In photographing a shadow of himself along with his friend René Wilson outside the Hotel Intercontinental in Princes Street, Auckland, Max Oettli created one of the more complex self-portraits made in New Zealand during the 1970s. By standing still in the middle of the street to have their photograph taken between 2 bars of light, René collaborates in a simple and amusing partnership with the artist. The composition’s use of a partially demolished building to emphasizes the way Oettli can compose using silhouettes.
