Guillaumin au pendu

Artwork Information

The title of this portrait is a visual pun. Guillaumin and Cezanne both explored the medium of etching during the summer and autumn of 1873 when in Auvers. The print shows Guillaumin seated in a relaxed position in front of a small sketch of a hanged man, which itself hung by a nail on the wall. The insert of the hanged man is in a similar position to small framed views included in many Japanese prints that were collected avidly by many artists of the time. (Impressions of a Time and Place, 2002)
