Artwork Information
John Tole visited Lake Rotoiti, near Rotorua, with his brother Charles and their friend John Weeks in the summer of 1948. They were stunned by the changes in the appearance of the hills around the lake, where the remains of a dead podocarp forest were being inter-planted with kauri trees. The misty rain further stresses the melancholic mood of this scene. (Representation and Reaction, 2004)
