Artwork Information
By 1876, the Waikato railway had reached Taupiri, skirting the hill and crossing the bridge on the left. Sharpe’s vantage point, ‘Little Taupiri Hill’ is the sacred burial site of the Tainui tribes, looking out across the Waikato lands which had been confiscated following the New Zealand Wars of 1863-4.
