Stingel’s painting practice aligns with a second wave of conceptual artists. His paintings from this era represent a key moment of change for painting practice following from the 1980s when conceptual artists reinvested abstract painting with conceptual strategies. Stingel famously created a set of "painting instructions" for the execution of his works (Instruction 1989) and his paintings frequently explore the process of creation, such as spray painting with silver through a layer of tulle, and by using non-conventional materials for painting rather than seeking an expressive or authoritative artistic gesture.
