Artwork Information
Summer Encounter 1972-73 plays with the then current tensions between abstraction and figuration by portraying a feminised male as if he is a ‘peeping tom’. This articulation of a feminist perspective on men as ‘girly boys’ comically positions the viewer as having a female gaze. The fact that it is not immediately clear what gender the figure in the painting is makes the tension between who looks and who is being looked at even more charming.
