Jason stealing the Golden Fleece

Artwork Information

The Greek Argonauts, led by Jason, have come to Colchis to win the legendary Golden Fleece, the skin of a golden ram which hangs in a sacred grove guarded by a dragon. Jason will be helped by the sorceress Medea, daughter of the king. She is shown administering a sleeping potion to the dragon, accompanied by the soothing music of Orpheus’ harp. Pursued by Medea’s father and his followers, the heroes then flee in the Argo, eventually circling the known world and seeing all its wonders on their journey.
