Artwork Information

The painting from which this etching was taken was one of Tissot’s largest works, and its scale is reflected in the print. Produced while exiled in London, it portrays his great love, Mrs Newton, silhouetted against a background of chestnut leaves. The decorative outline of the figure is closely related to the single-figure format of Japanese ukiyo-e painting and printmaking, which proved so influential in both France and England in the second half of the 19th century.
