Kawhia, Red Hill, Kai Iwi (triptych)

Artwork Information

Central to this triptych is the cross motif, which echoes across all three photographs. In one image ‘Not Understood’ runs along the horizontal beam of a grave marker; two woven mats form a cross in another, with the view narrowed down to the area where Christ’s head rested; and in the third photograph a bold white cross created by square floor tiles reverses out of a shiny black background. Kawhia, Red Hill, Kai Iwi pays homage to Māori Christianity and expresses an awareness of the questions of faith in relation to death.
