Artwork Information

Léger's particular form of Cubism was often nicknamed 'tubism' because of his fascination with mechanical forms. Taken from the Leger's painting 'Femme tenant un vase' (1924), this aquatint was executed by Jacques Villon, the brother of Marcel Duchamp, under Leger's supervision. It was part of a series commissioned during the 1930s by the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune of works by 19th and 20th century masters, such as Cezanne, Renoir, Picasso and Matisse. Villon was an outstanding artist and printmaker in his own right, and he was much admired by his contemporaries for his great skill in evoking the individuality and style of their paintings.
