Biography
Darryn George is an artist and teacher whose geometric abstract paintings layer Māori content and Christian symbolism.

In the 1990s, George visited wharenui (meeting houses) and was particularly inspired by the innovative carving of Pineāmine Taiapa at Whāngārā Marae in Tūranga-nui-a-Kiwa/Gisborne. The house’s carvings, textures and patterns encouraged George’s spiritual symbolism.

George has also incorporated te reo Māori text into his paintings, often selecting words with multiple translations, as well as transliterated names of Biblical figures.
