Biography
Born in Ōtautahi Christchurch in 1945, Roy Good developed an interest in abstract art as a student at the School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University, where he became absorbed in the history of the Bauhaus. In keeping with Bauhaus tenets, he has worked across the fields of art and design, creating paintings and commercial designs that emit visual power using an economy of means.
After graduating from art school in the mid-1960s, Good moved to Auckland and began working with Television New Zealand (then NZBC), rising to the position of Head of Design in 1983. Some of his memorable logo designs include the kotuku on a red disc for the sesquicentennial commemoration in 1990, and the red eye ringed with the koru motifs for South Pacific Television. As a painter, Good has remained committed to a rigorous exploration of geometry and colour relationships, creating finely engineered works underpinned by subtle formal relationships and adjustments which resonate with subtlety and force.
