Anicka Yi

Anicka Yi was born in Seoul in 1971 and lives and works in New York. Yi has distinguished herself as one of the most radical artists of the last decade. Her practice merges art and science, exploring possible new definitions for the categories of human and non-human, technology and biology, natural and synthetic. Yi studied film theory at universities in Los Angeles and New York and worked in various positions in creative industries such as fashion and publishing prior to establishing herself as an artist. In 2016 she was awarded the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize.
Recent solo exhibitions include The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland (2014); Fridericianum, Kassel (2016); Kunsthalle Basel, Basel (2015); The Kitchen, New York (2018); Tate Modern: Turbine Hall, London (2021–22). Yi’s work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Witte de With Contemporary Art, Rotterdam; Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; New Museum, New York; and Palais De Tokyo, Paris.

Yi’s work was featured in the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. Her work is represented in several collections including the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Dikeou Collection, Denver; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland; Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette, Paris; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
