Taraia Ngakuti Tumuhia was an important Marutuahu and Hauraki chief and a leader of Ngati Tamatera. He played a major role in the intertribal wars of the early 19th century, including an expedition with Ngati Toa to fight against Ngai Tahu in the South Island. Lindauer’s portrait is dated 1874.
