Artwork Detail

Twenty-nine

"This is the first of several number portraits I have made. It is both silly and sophisticated, and plays with representation on different levels. There is something very objective about constructing a portrait using numbers, but it is intuitive as well. It is interesting that mathematical symbols can be arranged to portray not just a figure, but personality and demeanor as well. We tend to think of numbers and faces as very different things, but numbers are also very human. They are one of the ways in which we understand the world."
