Artwork Detail

He Kaiwhakangahau (The Entertainer) consists of magnets which attach to a large circular disc, painted vivid pink. The magnets are arranged in a diamond shape.

He Kaiwhakangahau (The Entertainer) is the late Prince Tui Teka from Ruatahuna in Te Urewera. Teka was a central figure in the showband The Māori Volcanics and he adopted the title 'Prince' when he joined the Māori Troubadours. He performed throughout Australasia and South East Asia and was known for his extravagant wardrobe of rhinestone jackets, and personality. He appeared in films such as Came A Hot Friday - with Billy T James - and in Savage Islands where he featured as a cannibal chief. He became a household name with the popular hit 'E Ipo'.
