Shrouded in mystery, this bronze of a young woman was acquired by James Tannock Mackelvie as a genuine antique sculpture. He went through considerable difficulties to get permission to remove the work from Italy for this reason. Its authenticity has since been challenged, being described instead as a Neoclassical replica of a marble figure in the collection of the Louvre, Paris, deposited there by Napoleon's brother in law, Joachim Murat, when he fled Naples.
