Artwork Information

This painting is partly the hand of Hobbema himself and his studio, and is typical of the artist both in style and subject. He was one of the most accomplished Dutch realist landscape painters of the 17th century after his friend and teacher Jacob van Ruisdael, although unlike the latter Hobbema used brighter tones, especially in the light-filled middle distance. His work was much sought after by English collectors in the following two centuries, and greatly influenced English landscape painting.
