A Centenarian: Aperahama, aged 104

1908

Artwork Information

Said to have worn a puhoro or thigh tattoo, Aperehama Rairai belonged to the Ngati Te Ata people of Waiuku. A place rich in history and natural beauty, Waiuku means 'river with white clay'. Aperehama was reputedly 104 years old when painted by Goldie in 1908, still showing his feisty personality. (Chic Colonials: Ataahua, 2003)
