Instead of just comparing Christ to a lamp as he had done in earlier works, McCahon takes the idea of Christ as ‘the light of the world’ one step further in this painting. Christ’s manifestation in a lamp recalls his assurance to his disciples, ‘I am with you always’. (McCahon's Visible Mysteries, 2004)
