Rosalie Gascoigne made assemblages using items she gleaned from her immediate surroundings. In this instance she replicated a scrap of signage with her own hand painting. Often sun-bleached and weathered, Gascoigne’s raw materials appear as barren as the landscape of Australia, where this work was produced. Cockatoos recalls the discordant sound of parrots surrounding the artist’s home in Canberra. Gascoigne’s work imbues ordinary objects with a poetry and beauty similar to the Japanese art of ikebana, or flower arrangement.
