In 1968 and 1969, artist collaborators Mark Boyle and Joan Hills invited friends to participate in the Journey to the Surface of the Earth. They blindfolded participants and asked them to throw a dart at a wall-sized map of the world. Boyle and Hills attempted to visit as many of these sites as possible, reaching over 1000 dart-selected locations. Once there, they made what they described as ‘earthprobes’, using a mixture of actual surface matter and resin casting. This work was made in 1990 at a site in Gisborne.
