Kinetic Object: 2 Stripes

Artwork Information

Gerhard von Graevenitz’s Kinetic Object operates like a painting with a composition in perpetual motion. Von Graevenitz’s use of movement in his geometric constructions playfully reinterprets the vocabulary of abstract painting developed by artists like Piet Mondrian in the early 20th century. Despite the visual simplicity of this work – black bars on a white background – it is a reaction against rigidity. With no composition in the traditional sense, Kinetic Object’s movement seeks a new freedom for painting.
