Blasted Trunk and Folded Hills

1943

Artwork Information

Sutherland took part in the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London. Like Paul Nash, he became fascinated by objets trouvés such as root forms and fragments of thorn bushes that demonstrated the principles of organic growth, as well as focussing on geological and mineral forms. At the core of his own art was an attempt to express an essence which lies beyond realistic form, so that an uncanny presence is suggested.
