Artwork Information
Bridget Riley’s Op art uses optical illusion to foreground the act of looking. By carefully manipulating colour, tone and shape, Riley creates works that seem to ripple and move. In 1927, physicist Werner Heisenberg published his Uncertainty Principle, which shows how the act of observation itself alters the behaviour of particles. Riley’s ongoing interest in the theory and analysis of perception reveals the impact of this branch of
science on the visual arts. Her meticulously planned paintings and prints come to life only as they are being experienced.
