Artwork Information
The dramatic lighting and tight frame of this photograph, featuring just a detail of the courthouse, create an immensely successful image. Viewed in isolation one becomes much more aware of the individual architectural elements of the building: its planes and angles, the fine detailing of the column and portrait head and the varying textures of the materials.
The carving on the courthouse was the work of the young German engraver Anton Teutenberg. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and Lord Chief Justice Campbell are among the figures whose portraits were carved for the building.
