Artwork Information
When an art student Hartigan studied both neon signs and tattooing. In the early 80s he became New Zealand’s foremost artist using neon and continues to execute large public commissions. The medium provides a synthesis of both line and colour with the possibility of the transitory effects of animation and reflection. The pictographic shapes range from the bio-morphic to the primitive as well as cartoon-like doodles. (The Cartoon Show, 2001)
