Artwork Information

While staying on the Balearic island of Ibiza in 1933, Frances Hodgkins began painting this panoramic view across the harbour, seen from Dalt Vila, the old hill top town. The deep colours suggest the late afternoon or evening, the time when Hodgkins preferred to paint, when the heat and light were less intense. She finished the work back in London, noting, ‘I am looking for a quiet corner where I can settle down and crystallise the afterglow of my Spanish memories – before they grow dim.'
