An imitator of Alma-Tadema's classical genre scenes, Godward made his reputation from painting single female figures, diaphanously draped, in startling, naturalistic detail. In Memories, Godward has included an arcane version of a three-legged symbol, a triskelion or triskeles, on the wall, which has the head of the Medusa in the centre. In this case, the three legs turn to the right, thereby symbolising good luck. One of the symbol's many references is that of daughter, wife and goddess.
