Artwork Information
Mortimer was a master of the 'hybrid' which André Chastel defined as:
the form that, with a feeling of whimsy and caprice, confounds the image of the species, combining animate and inanimate, vegetable and animal, bestial and human, in a state of continuous metamorphosis.
The Romantics recognised that their insistence on the significance of the Self meant an acceptance of the human capacity for opposing sentiments: violence and tenderness; sense and savagery.
