The Hand (Study of a hand)

Artwork Information

This image is both a gesture of protest and a homage to forensic photography. It is both a waved greeting and a gesture of warning. By using equivocal gestures, Fomison creates paintings that expose different psychological states. This is a hand that gesticulates in defiance, while surrendering itself to something that is stronger.

‘I am very committed to painting and therefore, very prejudiced! I believe that vision is everything, but that despite the large population today, its is probably as rare as ever. And I don’t mean optical vision, I mean the narrated, imagined vision of the visionary.’ Tony Fomison (Self and Other, 2003)
